DFW figure skater’s disastrous error all but ends Olympic medal hopes

Plano resident Amber Glenn almost certainly won’t win a second medal at the Winter Olympics.

Glenn made a disastrous error and sat in 13th place after her short program in the women’s singles figure skating competition Tuesday at the Milan Cortina Games in Italy.

Glenn still advanced to Thursday’s free skate but has little chance to move up onto the podium.

Performing to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” the 26-year-old three-time U.S. champion received no points on one of her elements when she turned a triple loop into a double. That sent her tumbling down the standings, despite being one of only two women to land the more difficult triple axel during the program.

“I had it,” Glenn told her coach, Damon Allen, according to the Associated Press.

Japan’s Ami Nakai leads after the short program, followed by teammate Kaori Sakamoto and American Alysa Liu.

The free skate is scheduled for noon CST Thursday on NBC.

Glenn won a gold medal last week as part of a U.S. victory in the team figure skating event.
