Dallas Cowboys, keep’em or cut’em: Gavin Escobar

The waiting game on Gavin Escobar might be over.

He joined the Cowboys as a second round pick out of San Diego State in 2013 and was thought to have Jason Witten-like traits. It seemed he would be a perfect fit in a two-tight end formation. He had four touchdown catches in 2014. Last season, he had nine catches before a torn Achilles ended his season.

The injury to James Hanna clouds the tight end position a bit.

Jason Witten will someday be in the Hall of Fame. That’s all that needs to be said. Geoff Swaim has gone from the 246th pick in the 2015 draft to a backup job, until Hanna is healthy. Undrafted rookie Austin Traylor from Wisconsin has been impressive. Rico Gathers is likely headed to the practice squad.

Escobar could be the odd man out.

Cut’em.
