5 thoughts from Cowboys camp include bright spots from Prescott

1 Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott described his day with the first team as “a lot of goods, but there’s some bads.” That’s a fair description. In the two-minute offense, Prescott went 7-of-10 passing in leading the team on a field goal drive. He did have some good luck when Morris Claiborne dropped what should have been an interception. All in all, Prescott showed poise and handled the first team well with Tony Romo getting a day off.

2 Second-year pro Jameill Showers had a solid day as well as the No. 2 quarterback. Showers particularly shined in 7-on-7 drills. He connected down the near sideline with Chris Brown for a nice gain, and found Gavin Escobar for a 35-yard touchdown. Showers felt good about his day, but said he needs to make quicker decisions in the pocket.

3 Kicker Dan Bailey missed his first field goals of camp. With a stiff breeze, Bailey failed to convert from 51 and 53 yards. He did make his previous four attempts from 40, 42, 46 and 49. And Bailey bounced back by drilling a 56-yarder to cap off Prescott’s two-minute drive.

4 With only two quarterbacks participating Thursday, coach Jason Garrett returned to his throwing days during drills. And Garrett continued throwing with Prescott after practice. The two challenge each other in accuracy by seeing who can hit each other in the face with the ball more. Who won? “We’ve got to go to the judge’s table on that,” Prescott said, smiling.

5 Guard Ron Leary is having an impressive training camp and appears to be on a mission to show he can start in the league. Leary remains hopeful to get a starting opportunity somewhere, and it doesn’t appear the Cowboys are a realistic option. La’el Collins has taken that job, leaving Leary essentially playing for 31 other teams at this point.

Quote of the day

“There was a lot going on, but I definitely needed it. I didn’t take too many reps on the first couple of days, so it was definitely good for me.” — Jameill Showers on working with the second team Thursday
