5 thoughts from Day 4 of Cowboys camp

1 The Cowboys suffered their first blow of training camp with backup quarterback Kellen Moore going down with a broken bone in his lower right leg. That means fourth-round pick Dak Prescott is the backup for now, and coach Jason Garrett spent extra time with Prescott after practice. Prescott said it had nothing to do with Moore’s injury, adding: “Me and coach Garrett are always consistently talking about things I can get better at my game and that was something we were kind of talking about there at the end.”

2 You’ve got to love Jason Witten. He praised the work Kellen Moore has done this off-season and expressed empathy with his situation. But Witten didn’t bite when asked if the Cowboys needed to look outside the organization for a quarterback. Said Witten: “I’ve got my own issues to worry about. I’m trying to put the tight end position under control. They do a great job of brining in football players to help our team. It’s Aug. 2, I’m dialed in on my own game and what I can do to get better.”

3 Dez Bryant is dealing with a blister on his right foot, and sat out a few one-on-one drills while getting it taped. Bryant participated in the majority of practice and took part returning punts. Don’t expect Bryant to be back there on Sundays, though, as this is an annual training camp tease.

4 Lucky Whitehead did not have a good day at practice, dropping two consecutive passes in team drills. Whitehead is the odds-on favorite to win the returner job again, but it is not guaranteed. The Cowboys do seem intrigued by getting Whitehead more involved on the offense. He was used to run a reverse during team drills.

5 The Cowboys’ offensive line is among the strengths of the team, and they have quality depth at the position. Left guard Ronald Leary seems set on showing he should start somewhere in the league. He manhandled rookie Rodney Coe during a drill in front of the team, prompting defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli to bark at Coe: “Why don’t you go take a shower?”

Quote of the day

“It’s up there. But you come out and coach football hard and then have a chance to mold them.” – Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli on if this is the most inexperienced defensive line group he’s ever coached
