Dallas Cowboys re-sign safety Jeff Heath to 4-year deal
The Dallas Cowboys continued a free agent period that has been focused on backups and depth with the signing of safety Jeff Heath to a four-year deal on Wednesday.
Heath, a restricted free agent, had until April 22 to sign his tender of $1.67 million for 2016. The Cowboys did him one better by locking him up with a four-year deal that likely lowers his cap figure, but gives him some long-term security.
Heath is a reliable backup safety and special teams performer who has played in 46 of 48 games since joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley State in 2013.
He led the Cowboys with two interceptions last year and nine tackles on special teams.
Restricted free agent guard Ron Leary remains unsigned. He got a second-round tender worth $2.553 million for 2016.
He is expected to sign before next week's deadline.
