Jimmy Johnson and Terrell Owens on Tuesday were announced as semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016.

Owens, who played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2006-08, is one of three first-year-eligible players on the ballot. Brett Favre and Alan Faneca are the others.

Two other players, offensive tackle Tony Boselli and linebacker Sam Mills, made the semifinalist list for the first time since becoming eligible.

Darren Woodson, who entered the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor earlier this month, did not make the cut after being on the semifinalist list for the first time last year.

Owens ranks sixth all-time in receptions (1,078), and second in receiving yards (15,934) and receiving touchdowns (153). He made six Pro Bowls and five times was first-team All-Pro, the only player in history to earn All-Pro honors with three different teams.

In his three seasons with the Cowboys, Owens played in 46 games, making 235 catches for 3,587 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Johnson, one of three coaches on the list, is a semifinalist for the third consecutive year. He became a finalist for the first time last year.

Johnson last coached in the NFL in 1999. He won two Super Bowls in his five years coaching the Cowboys.

A nominated player or coach must have been retired for five consecutive seasons to be eligible.

Selectors will trim to 15 finalists with a mail ballot in January. Seniors candidates Ken Stabler and Dick Stanfel will appear on the ballot, too, along with contributor finalist Edward DeBartolo Jr.

Selectors will choose the Class of 2016 the eve of Super Bowl 50.
