Tight end Jason Witten isn’t going to take himself out of the game too often. So the Cowboys knew something wasn’t right when Witten headed to the sidelines in the second half Sunday.

Fortunately for them, Witten missed only three plays despite spraining both ankles and a knee during the game. He played 82 of 85 offensive snaps.

“Witt’s a special guy,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We kept asking ourselves if we have 12 personnel, 13 personnel, do we have personnel groups up for the game because of his injury. Before we know it, he’s running out and he’s in the huddle. He’s just a damn good football player and it’s everything to do with the kind of person he is.

“He’s a great leader, he’s an inspiration to us every day and yesterday he did a fantastic job in the game. He really got us going in the passing game.”

Witten finished with a team-high seven catches for 56 yards, and Garrett sounded confident that Witten wouldn’t miss any time going forward. Witten did too after the game.

“I’ll be fine,” Witten said. “It wasn’t anything. Typical football stuff.”

In other injury news, reserve tight end James Hanna underwent a knee scope on Saturday and didn’t travel with the team. Hanna could return to practice as early as this week, though, Garrett said.

And left guard Ronald Leary is also expected to work his way back this week after sitting out Sunday’s game with a groin injury.
