Life without Dez Bryant begins today as the Cowboys work out four receivers. Hakeem Nicks, Austin Pettis, Nick Toon and Clyde Gates arrived at Valley Ranch for workouts, a source confirmed.
Nicks, a first-round pick of the Giants in 2009, was among the Titans’ final cuts. He worked out for the Saints last week.
The Titans had signed Nicks to a one-year, $1.4 million contract that included a signing bonus of $100,000.
Nicks, 27, spent five seasons with the Giants, posting 1,000-yard seasons with Eli Manning in 2010 and 2011. He had career-lows last season with the Colts, catching 38 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns.
Pettis, a third-round pick of the Rams in 2011, has 95 career receptions for 916 yards and eight touchdowns. He had his best season in 2013 with the Rams when he made 38 catches for 399 yards and four touchdowns.
Pettis played five games with the Rams and four with the Chargers last season. He was released by the Chargers in final cuts earlier this month.
Toon, a fourth-round pick of the Saints in 2012, is recovering from a high-ankle sprain. He was among the Saints’ final cuts after making 21 catches for 283 yards and a touchdown for them in his first three seasons.
Gates, a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2011, was with the Cowboys in training camp. He has played three seasons, making 30 catches for 365 yards and no touchdowns for the Dolphins and Jets.
The Cowboys have four receivers on their roster – Terrance Williams, Devin Street, Cole Beasley and Lucky Whitehead. They also have practice squad receivers Rodney Smith and Vince Mayle, although neither was with the Cowboys in training camp.
Bryant is expected to miss at least six weeks while recovering from foot surgery. He fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Sunday’s game and had surgery Monday.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday the Cowboys expect to sign a receiver.
