Cut down day has begun for the Dallas Cowboys, and the team has decided to go with only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster for the season.

Dustin Vaughan and Jameill Showers have both been informed they won’t make the roster, a source said, but the Cowboys would like to bring them back on the practice squad should they clear waivers. Neither decision comes as a surprise, though.

By keeping only starter Tony Romo and backup Brandon Weeden at quarterback, the Cowboys will have flexibility to go long at another position.

Vaughan, an undrafted quarterback out of West Texas A&M, made the roster last season as the third quarterback, but didn’t see any regular-season action. The Cowboys feel Vaughan has potential, but he didn’t have a great training camp or preseason.

Vaughan went the distance in the preseason finale against Houston on Thursday, and finished the preseason by going 35-of-67 passing for 343 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He had a 54.5 quarterback rating.

Showers, meanwhile, has versatility as a special teams contributor and quarterback. At quarterback during the preseason, he was 15-of-32 passing for 125 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Cowboys have until 3 p.m. today to get their roster to 53.
