Colts receiver ready to face his brother, Cowboys’ top rookie, this season

Caleb and Josh Downs have done what few brothers ever will with both reaching the NFL, and they’ll get the chance to play each other when the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts meet this season.

The Cowboys took Caleb Downs, a defensive back from Ohio State, with the No. 11 overall pick in April’s draft.

Josh Downs, Caleb’s elder brother, is a wide receiver for the Colts who was selected in the third round, pick No. 79, in 2023 out of North Carolina.

The eldest brother talked about playing his baby brother, joking he was ready to put him in his place.

“I remember before he got drafted, not to like talk about the Cowboys’ scheme or nothing, but he told me if he goes to the Cowboys, he’s playing nickel. So that’s like head-to-head all game,” Josh Downs said. “So when he got drafted, I was like, you know we play y’all this year. He got all hype. ... It’s alI fun and games, but you know I gotta still let him know he’s the little brother in this situation.”

Josh Down has turned into a solid receiver for the Colts, amassing 198 receptions for 2,140 yards and 11 touchdowns in three seasons. He had 58 catches for 566 yards and four TDs last season.

Caleb is already starting to turn heads for the Cowboys, and prognosticators are similarly high on him, with the rookie tied for third in Defensive Rookie of the Year odds at +850, trailing edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. of Tampa Bay and David Bailey of the New York Jets.

The Downs brothers know they will play at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and they will find out when they will play when the NFL schedule is released at 7 p.m. Thursday.
