Spears said on ESPN’s “NFL Live” that Raheem Morris, recently fired as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, should get the job when asked to choose among Morris, fired Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
“If you notice every place that he’s been defensive coordinator-wise or head coach, he’s always had a stalwart [cornerback]. That’s just what he believes in,” Spears said. “He’s going to go find a guy that can handle one side of the field, so that would be the first thing that comes to my mind with the glaring issues that Dallas has.”
Spears also pointed out how Morris develops players, citing rookie James Pearce Jr.’s 10.5 sacks, as another reason the team should sign him.
The Cowboys have interviewed or have set up interviews with at least six candidates so far, but it remains to be seen if the team will be interested in Morris.
Morris, 49, was also previously the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
The Cowboys drafted Spears, a defensive lineman from LSU, with the No. 20 overall pick in 2005, and he played eight seasons with the franchise.
