Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs on potential offseason exit: ‘Whatever happens, happens’
Since landing on the injured reserve list in October, it’s been mostly radio silence from Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs as he continues to have a spotlight of controversy surround him.
On Friday, he finally broke that silence.
Speaking at his locker in the Cowboys’ headquarters at The Star in Frisco, Diggs was mostly short with his answers about if he’s in line to play on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. After missing the last seven games with knee soreness and a concussion he suffered in an at-home incident, his participation in the final month of the season — or the lack thereof — would be notable.
“Last week, they said I didn’t have enough practice,” Diggs said. “Ask them. They have the answer. I’m ready, though.”
Considering the Cowboys are in the negative for available cap space in 2026 and their vocal displeasure with how Diggs has handled past rehabs and the lack of being a leader, in owner Jerry Jones’ words at training camp in July, the writing is on the wall that this could be Diggs’ last chance to suit up for the Cowboys. He called these final four games “very important” for his future, although he isn’t getting too caught up into what that future looks like.
“No, not really,” he said. “I know who I am, I know what I’m capable of. I know what I can do. I’m not in a crisis of not knowing how to play football. I know how to play football. I know what skillset I have. It’s all about showing it and putting it out there and making the plays I always make.”
“The motivation is being able to go back out there with my brothers, being able to play with those guys and run around, fly around, hit people, take the ball away. Doing everything together. That’s the most fun part I’ve had with the game.”
On whether he wants to be back in Dallas after this season, Diggs was affirmative in his answer.
“Yeah, of course,” he said. “I love Dallas. But at the end of the day, it’s a business. Whatever happens, happens. I’m ready, I’m prepared for it. I would love to be here. I love everything that comes with Dallas, the fans, the relationships I’ve built here. But if that’s not what it is, it’s just not what it is.”
This latest stint with a knee issue has risen questions about if he will ever play for the Cowboys again. On Wednesday, head coach Brian Schottenheimer alluded that it might be more than just his injury rehab that is keeping him from making his return to the field.
“I love him as a player,” Schottenheimer said. “But ultimately he’s got to show us that he’s ready to do everything the right way.”
Diggs returned to the practice field on Nov. 30, and he must be activated off the injured reserve list by Dec. 21 to play again this season. While he said he feels healthy and ready to go for Sunday against Minnesota, it will not be his decision.
“It’s definitely been hard,” Diggs said. “Of course, you want to get back out there. People feel how they feel, and you just got to roll with the punches and keep pushing forward.”
