As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to return to the field on Monday night for a game against the Las Vegas Raiders after their bye week, they will do so with heavy hearts as they continue to mourn and grieve the loss of defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland.
The second-year Western Michigan product died by suicide at the age of 24 last week at the start of the team’s bye.
While Cowboys players and coaches said that they plan to honor Kneeland by replicating his high-effort, high-motor play style for the rest of the season, the team is also planning to honor him in other ways over the next few weeks.
The team’s leadership council has voted on a helmet decal that will be worn for the rest of the season, and it is expected to debut in the team’s game against the Raiders. The Cowboys will also have T-shirts for their pregame warmups that will be worn against the Raiders and the following home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 23.
There will be a moment of silence before the game in Las Vegas and a tribute video at the game against the Eagles.
“They definitely hit us up asking about the T-shirt designs and stuff like that,” defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa said. “We helped pick those out. We talked about immediately in the group chat after finding out that his girlfriend is pregnant, it’s like we’ve got to support her. That’s like the first thing that we did.”
To support his unborn child and girlfriend, Catalina, the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund was opened up where players, coaches, friends and fans can all contribute to support his loved ones.
“The organization has been amazing,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “[The family] have started the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund where we can all give to support Catalina. We want to make sure she is taken care and the baby is taken care of for the rest of their lives. It is very important to our guys and to us.”
A team official said that there are more things being fine-tuned to honor Kneeland this season and into the future.
“With the other decisions, he is still part of the team,” Schottenheimer said. “There will be decisions that are made. That won’t be just by me. They will be made by the leadership of his group. We will make the right decisions. We have got time to make those decisions.“
