Dallas Cowboys complete blockbuster trade for 3-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle

Happy Deadline Day!

Hours after the Dallas Cowboys completed a trade for Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson, the team has completed another deal with the New York Jets for three-time All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, the Star-Telegram confirmed.

The Cowboys are sending a 2027 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and defensive tackle Mazi Smith in the deal. The first-round pick sent to New York will be the higher of the two selections the Cowboys own in the round in 2027.

Williams, 27, is coming off a three-season stretch that has seen him make the Pro Bowl each season and a first-team AP All-Pro squad in 2022. In seven seasons, Williams has accounted for 322 tackles, 59 tackles for loss and 40 sacks in becoming one of the league’s premier defensive tackles.

He reunites with Cowboys defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, who coached him the previous four seasons before departing for Dallas in the 2025 offseason.

Before trading Micah Parsons in August to the Green Bay Packers, the Cowboys called the New York Jets about trading for Williams for a package that would include Parsons. The two sides couldn’t find middle-ground, and Parsons ended up getting dealt to the Packers instead. Less than three months later, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones gets the defensive tackle he was hunting all along.

Heading into the 2026 draft, the Cowboys own two first-round picks, a fourth-round pick, a fifth-round pick and a seventh-round pick. They are expected to land a compensatory fifth-round pick as well, although that won’t be finalized until the offseason.

After being taken in the first round of the 2023 draft, Smith now departs Dallas in what became a disappointing three-season stretch for the Michigan product. He wasn’t able to live up to his first-round billing and was on the inactive list for four games this season.

To make room for the two acquisitions, the Cowboys will need to trade a player before the 3 p.m. CST deadline or release a player. They would have until the players’ arrivals Wednesday to figure out the roster replacements.

According to Spotrac, the Cowboys will pay Williams $8.4 million in 2025, $21.75 million ($5 million guaranteed) in 2026 and $25.5 million in 2027.
