Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs suffers concussion at home, will miss game vs. Commanders

Just as the Dallas Cowboys appeared to be heading toward playing a game with full health on their active roster, the team lost one of its starting cornerbacks for the game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

After an incident at his home Thursday night, cornerback Trevon Diggs came into the team facility with concussion symptoms on Friday, and team doctors determined he does have a concussion that will prevent him from playing against the Commanders.

“Trevon Diggs came in this morning with some concussion symptoms after having an accident at his home,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “He’s been checked out by our doctors, is in the protocol and will miss the game.”

Schottenheimer was asked about what led to the incident in Friday’s press conference, and he said that he is still gathering information.

“We’re gathering information,” he said. “I just learned this information walking over from our doctors.”

In Diggs’ place, Schottenheimer mentioned Trikweze Bridges and Caelen Carson as potential fill-ins against the Commanders. Bridges was claimed off waivers to begin the season and has played in all six games with 26 snaps on defense. Carson, who was put on injured reserve to start the season, would have to be activated to play on Sunday.

An open roster spot is already present after the team waived wide receiver Jalen Cropper earlier in the week.

“It’s part of the business, but it’s unfortunate,” Schottenheimer said. “We obviously want what’s best for Trevon, and we certainly wish him well. But, next man up. We have a lot of guys we’re excited to evaluate.”

The injury is also expected to give Kaiir Elam a start on the outside after he had been relegated to rotational duty in the past two weeks.
