Where did Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott land in latest NFL quarterback ranking?
The Athletic ranked the best veteran NFL quarterbacks and put them into five tiers. Where did they rank Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, and who earned the No. 1 spot? The poll was voted on by a panel of 50, consisting of NFL general managers, head coaches, coordinators and executives, among others.
The No. 1 spot was a tie between Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, who were selected as “Tier 1” QBs alongside Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford.
Dak Prescott ranked 12th and was placed in Tier 2 with quarterbacks such as Detroit’s Jared Goff, Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts and Houston’s C.J. Stroud.
Tier 2 quarterbacks were described as players who had holes in their game but also thrived in passing situations and could elevate their team, though not as consistently as Tier 1 quarterbacks.
On Prescott, voters called the QB solid but cited what they called an inability to win big games.
“I’m not necessarily worried about anything when I play him, but he’s just solid,” a defensive coordinator said. “He will put the ball where it needs to be, he can scramble a little bit. If he has to carry it and throw it 50 times, you’ll get him a few times. I think he is still good. I started to 2 slash 3 him, but I think he is a 2.”
Entering his 10th year, Prescott has as many seasons leading the league in average annual salary as he has playoff wins (two). Does any long-established QB need a deep postseason run more?
“He has proven when it comes to the big games, he can’t win,” another defensive coach said. “I’ve had him as a 2 before, but over the years, it is the same thing over and over again.”
The rest of the Tier 2 quarterbacks were Washington’s Jayden Daniels, the Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert, Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield, Green Bay’s Jordan Love and San Francisco’s Brock Purdy.
