Cowboys’ rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. suffers setback with knee injury

After dealing with some discomfort in rehab sessions at training camp, Dallas Cowboys rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. is no longer expected to return from his torn ACL in time for the season opener, a team source tells Star-Telegram. Revel’s father also told 105.3 The Fan that his son’s recovery is expected to last another 6-8 weeks.

When Revel was drafted, there was optimism that he would be able to return at some point while the team is in Southern California for training camp, but the team is erring on the side of caution with their third-round selection from April’s draft. For a player that the front office viewed as a first-round talent that slipped because of his injury, the team wants him at full strength ahead of his return to the field.

Revel, a product of East Carolina, first emerged on early draft boards as a potential first-round pick going into his senior year in college. However, in a practice leading into an early season contest against Liberty in September, he tore his ACL, ending his season.

Less than a month later, he had his surgery done by the Cowboys’ team physician, Dr. Dan Cooper, who routinely deals with similar injuries to top college talents. It was by happenstance that Revel ended up wearing a Dallas Cowboys uniform by the end of the draft process.

His injury is one of many that the cornerback room is reeling from heading into the season. Trevon Diggs is continuing to rehab from a bone chondral surgery that was performed in January, Josh Butler will rehab well into the season from his torn ACL that he suffered on Thanksgiving last season, Caelen Carson is expected to be out 4-6 weeks with a hyperextended knee and Andrew Booth Jr. missed practice on Thursday with a hamstring injury.

As the team hits the halfway point of training camp in Oxnard, the starting cornerbacks are expected to be DaRon Bland, Kaiir Elam and either Israel Mukuamu or Kemon Hall when the Cowboys line up against the Philadelphia Eagles in week one. However, hope exists that Diggs could be available in time to play in the season opener.
