The Dallas Cowboys have already lost a key player to injury in training camp

After being rolled up on following a collision of bodies at a training camp practice Monday, Dallas Cowboys starting left tackle Tyler Guyton suffered a bone fracture in his right knee, confirmed by a Star-Telegram team source.

An MRI confirmed the injury Monday evening and shot down concerns of a torn ACL. While the timeline for his recovery is still up in the air, hope exists that he can return in time for the season opener in Philadelphia on Sept. 4.

Guyton, who is entering his second season after being drafted in the first round in 2024, was mentioned by owner and general manager Jerry Jones as a standout early on in camp on Sunday. On Monday, he was stacking multiple wins in pass rush during team drills before coming down with the injury.

After he hit the ground, he was tended to by the medical staff before walking straight to the locker room. He did not return to the practice field.

While he is away for the remaining 11 practices in California, they will be on the hunt to find someone else to protect the blindside of quarterback Dak Prescott in 2025. Internal options include third-year Asim Richards, newly acquired Hakeem Adeniji and second-year Nate Thomas.

Another option would be to move starting left guard Tyler Smith out to left tackle. That scenario would then create a competition at guard for players such as Brock Hoffman, Saahdiq Charles and T.J. Bass. If the timeline was more extended, then that would be a more viable option, but the Cowboys will most likely look at a second-team left tackle to fill in for Guyton in the meantime.

Regardless, decisions will have to be made up front to protect the health of not only Prescott, but the entire offensive backfield in the event that Guyton does not return in time for the season opener.

It’s the second offensive lineman to go down with an injury in as many days after veteran guard Rob Jones suffered a bone fracture in his neck on Sunday. He is expected to be out for 2-3 months.
