Dallas Cowboys comment on arrest of Pro Bowl receiver, former TCU standout
On Monday, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer commented for the first time on the recent arrest of two-time All-Pro KaVontae Turpin’s July 5 arrest.
The Cowboys wide receiver and former TCU standout was arrested in Allen on charges of possession of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon after he after was pulled over for driving 97-mph in a 70-mph zone. According to Collin County records, he was jailed and released on the two misdemeanor charges.
“I spoke to Turp,” Schottenheimer said. “He talked through a lot of things. He understands that there is a standard with how we conduct ourselves. He knows that he needs to be better, but we won’t get into all of the specifics.”
Any disciplinary actions against Turpin taken by the team are expected to be internal.
Turpin is entering his fourth season in the NFL after signing a three-year, $18 million extension this offseason to remain with the only NFL franchise he’s known. In his three seasons, he has emerged as one of the game’s top return specialists, having earned All-Pro honors in 2022 and 2024.
After his tenure at TCU ended in 2018 following two domestic violence charges stemming from an incident with his then-partner, Turpin was dismissed from the program and never played college football again.
After going undrafted in 2019, Turpin signed with the Frisco Fighters of the Indoor Football League. Following one season there, he played one year with the Glacier Boyz of the Fan Controlled Football League, one year with the Panthers Wroclaw of the European League of Football and one season with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL.
His performance with the Generals landed him the USFL MVP award in 2022 and a training camp tryout with the Cowboys that summer. After earning a roster spot, he carved a role as the team’s primary return specialist and never relinquished his duties in three seasons since.
Entering his fourth season, it is expected that he will take a step forward on the offensive side of the ball to prove more value to his $18 million deal.
