Cowboys to host Chiefs on Thanksgiving, play against Commanders on Christmas
In the team’s annual home Thanksgiving Day game, the Dallas Cowboys will welcome in the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025 for a 3:25 p.m. kickoff on CBS.
It’s one of several national marquee games on the Cowboys schedule, who open the NFL season on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Philadelphia. The Cowboys then play their first home game in Week 2, against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 14.
On Thanksgiving, it’s a homecoming on the family holiday in more ways than one for the Chiefs, who began their days as a franchise in 1960 as the Dallas Texans playing in the American Football League (AFL). They shared the Cotton Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys for three seasons before relocating to Kansas City where the franchise has played for the last 63 years.
It will also be a return to the state of Texas for Whitehouse native Patrick Mahomes, who has firmly cemented himself as one of the NFL’s all-time greats with three Super Bowl wins (2019, 2022, 2023) and five conference championships. He will play on Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium just 135 miles from his East Texas hometown.
Going even further back over 100 years ago, the Kansas City Cowboys were one of the original NFL franchises before they folded after just three seasons from 1924 to 1926.
It’s only right that both franchises meet on Thanksgiving to bring the Hunt family (Chiefs ownership group that originated in Dallas) and Jones family together on the American holiday. It will be the second time in history that both teams have met on Thanksgiving, with the Cowboys defeating the Chiefs 24-12 in 1995 before going on to win their fifth (and most recent) Super Bowl.
As storylines shape up in the coming months for this matchup, one to watch will be the availability of Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown who is expected to return midseason from a torn ACL, MCL and LCL he suffered in December of last season.
The Chiefs, coming off a trip to the Super Bowl and a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, will return to Dallas for the first time since 2017 when the Cowboys protected home turf with a 28-17 win. The two teams last played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City with the Chiefs winning 19-9 in 2021.
The Cowboys will also travel to take on the Washington Commanders on Christmas Day, marking the fifth time the franchise has played on Dec. 25. The last time the Cowboys played on Christmas was in 2010, a league source confirmed to the Star-Telegram.
