Five things to know about Dallas Cowboys fifth-round pick Shemar James

The Dallas Cowboys continued beefing up their defense with the selection of Florida linebacker Shemar James with the No. 152 selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

James joins free agency signings Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray as additions to a linebacker core that could need help while missing DeMarvion Overshown at the onset of next season.

Here’s what to know about the Florida product.

Injury history

James dislocated his kneecap in 2023, which ended his season early, but he rebounded, playing all 13 games the following season for the Gators.

Florida commitment

James originally committed to Florida but dropped his commitment after the firing of then-head coach Dan Mullen, only to be persuaded to return by subsequent head coach Billy Napier. James credited the school environment for his deciding to return.

Faith journey

James said he embraced his faith in the ninth grade while attending Faith Academy and says his faith plays a key role for him, and that he plays gospel music when coming onto the field.

Best college running back he faced?

James cited fellow 2025 NFL draftee and former Florida Gator Trevor Etienne, selected by the Carolina Panthers, as the best running back he faced in college.

Standout college memory

Talking about his most memorable moments in college, James said his best game came in 2024 against LSU, where he had 11 tackles with two tackles for loss and two passes defended.
