Cornerback Brandon Carr is out indefinitely after breaking a bone in his right hand, per coach Jason Garrett.

Carr will fly back to Dallas to undergo surgery on Monday. Carr will almost certainly miss the first two preseason games but he should be back for the start of the season if not sooner.

Garrett said the injury is similar to the one former running back DeMarco Murray had last season. Murray didn’t miss any games, suffering the injury on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, undergoing surgery on Monday and then playing against the Indianapolis Colts the following Sunday.

“He’s going to be out for a little bit here,” Garrett said. “We don’t think it’s serious. It’s a similar injury to what DeMarco Murray had last year when he played in the game, four or five days later.

“The biggest thing with this is getting the surgery done correctly, which we’re confident is going to happen, and then handling the incision and see what he’s capable of doing.”

Of course, using your hands in man-to-man coverage at cornerback is different than being casted up to hold the ball at running back. But again the Cowboys believe Carr will be ready to go for the season opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 13.

Carr’s injury has the Cowboys thin at cornerback in training camp. Orlando Scandrick is out at least a couple of days with a sore knee. The team was already being cautious with Morris Claiborne, who is coming back from a torn patella tendon. Claiborne has not participated in 1-on-1 drills since the start of camp.

Garrett said that rookie top pick Byron Jones and veteran Corey White, who both had been getting looks at cornerback and safety, will almost exclusively work at cornerback with Carr out the next few weeks.
