Top prospect in upcoming NFL Draft critiques the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive scheme

Cam Ward, expected to be the first selection in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, was recently asked about his nerves concerning his transition to the NFL.

He used the Dallas Cowboys defense to explain his confidence.

“From a backend standpoint, a lot of guys want to put the safety, high, 25-yards down the field, leave the middle of the field wide open. So, some teams who did that to us this year they paid the price,” said Ward, “I think some teams in the NFL did a lot of two-high stuff like Dallas...they leave way too much space on the sidelines, down the seams and so I just think the arm strength the confidence I’m bringing along with me getting my receivers better I’ll be able to put the ball where I want.”

Ward finished his third and final college season at the University of Miami, leading the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record while throwing for 4,313 yards with 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

While Ward won’t be on their radar, the Cowboys could be looking for a quarterback in this year’s draft to back up Dak Prescott, with Trey Lance being a free agent and the departure of Cooper Rush.

The Star-Telegram’s mock draft had Dallas selecting Texas QB Quinn Ewers to replace the departing quarterbacks.
