Turnover ratio has consistently been the No. 1 statistic in determining wins and losses, according to coach Jason Garrett.

That’s why the Cowboys always emphasize the importance of protecting the ball on offense, as well as forcing it out on defense.

Look no further than Joseph Randle, who carried a football with him during the morning walk-through Wednesday. The Cowboys certainly don’t want him to have similar issues as DeMarco Murray last season.

Murray lost five fumbles in the regular season and another costly one in the playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers. Randle, meanwhile, lost two fumbles in the regular season, but on far less carries.

“The ball statistics in the league are the most compelling in terms of their correlation to winning football games,” Garrett said. “Offensive guys, if you’re a quarterback making great decisions, if you’re a ball carrier making sure you secure that ball … the more time you do it, whether it’s drills in practice or carrying a ball around, I think that’s going to benefit you.”

Defensively, the Cowboys ranked among the best in takeaways. The defense had the second-most in the league with 31, trailing only Houston’s 34.
