Dallas Cowboys

Why did Dallas legend Michael Irvin compare the Cowboys franchise to Blockbuster?

On Monday, the Dallas Cowboys introduced their new head coach, Brian Schottenheimer. Franchise legend Michael Irvin appeared on FOX Sports’ SPEAK and explained why the hire made him think of Blockbuster and Sears-Roebuck.

“Empires do fall, Sears and Roebuck used to own everything but they wouldn’t take all of their items out of that little book and put it on the internet. Oh, you could’ve been Amazon before Amazon but you were too [expletive] rigid to move and now you’re gone. Blockbuster was the same way; could’ve beat Netflix to Netflix...right here the Cowboys stayed rigid,” said Irvin.

Irvin said the Cowboys could’ve used a coach like Deion Sanders, who was heavily rumored to be interested in the role and has more cache with the current generation of fans.

“If we’re gonna pass down the great history of a great franchise to keep it alive, forever, even years beyond you. You gotta have connectivity and you’re not given this generation anything to connect to. Now Deion win, lose or draw, he’s connected with this young generation,” said Irvin.

The ex-Miami Hurricane also questioned if the team will respect Schottenheimer’s authority because of his role as a former coordinator though he said he hoped his assessment was wrong.

“How can [Schottenheimer’] bring discipline to these guys when these guys say dude we put you in that seat,” said Irvin, “I hope to pray I am wrong, I hope I’m wrong, but I’ve got too many championships to believe I’m wrong.”
