Why did Stephen A. Smith call Dallas Cowboys’ hiring of Brian Schottenheimer ‘pathetic’?

The Dallas Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer as the team’s next head coach, but many online have been critical of the idea including Stephen A. Smith who was on ‘First Take,’ when he lambasted the hiring.

What was Smith’s rationale?

He pointed to Jones’ quotes to ESPN upon announcing Schottenheimer.

“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Jones said. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Smith said the quote revealed everything wrong with Jones.

“All Jerry has done is fueled and just given credence to everything everybody has said negatively about him in terms of it being about him,” said Smith, “Brian Schottenheimer didn’t even call plays for your Dallas Cowboys team last year and you hired him as your head coach because somebody else that may have been more qualified...more capable would’ve been too much for [Jones] to share.”

Smith said he doesn’t expect this hiring to turn the Cowboys around and help them reach their first Super Bowl in almost 30 years.

On Monday, the Cowboys held a press conference for Schottenheimer to introduce their new head coach.
