Former Patriots player says Dallas Cowboys job would be enticing for ex-NFL coach Bill Belichick
While the Dallas Cowboys were contemplating how to proceed with then-head coach Mike McCarthy, many linked the team with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
Former New England Patriots player Rob Ninkovich, speaking with betway.com, pointed out that the Cowboys would be a good fit for Belichick because of the team’s roster construction.
“If you’re an experienced guy like Bill and you look at the Cowboys, that would be a very enticing situation. It’s the Dallas Cowboys, they’re America’s team, the history. You have a receiver, you’ve got a crazy pass rusher, and you have the ability to come in and potentially just use your knowledge to maximize the potential of the team. Of all the teams, I think Dallas would be the most interesting and enticing team to go to,” said Ninkovich.
However, the six-time Super Bowl champion signed a deal to coach UNC before the Cowboys moved on from McCarthy.
Yet, Belichick could be bought out of his contract for $10 million if he leaves before June 1, 2025, and for $1 million after said date.
Ninkovich gave his thoughts on whether his former coach would leave UNC for the NFL.
“I’m never going to say never. There’s always going to be certain situations or amounts of money that can influence somebody’s decision to stay or move on. I don’t know the dynamics of the contract situation, I know there’s a $10m buyout which becomes $1m after 1 June. In the past there was a situation where he was a head coach for one day and then moved on to New England, so I would never say that that couldn’t happen again, that’s for sure,” said Ninkovich.
CBS Sports reporter Jonathan Jones revealed that Belichick hasn’t yet signed his contract which puts the coach in a gray area of how much if any of his buyout would have to be paid if he were to leave for the NFL.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously said he could see himself working with Bill Belichick and was complimentary of the coach last year following the Green Bay Packers knocking Dallas out of the playoffs.
