Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Deion Sanders have talked about head coach opening

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders had a preliminary conversation on Monday night about the head coach vacancy in Dallas, Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports.

Just hours after it was announced that the Cowboys were parting ways with five-year head coach Mike McCarthy, the first public knowledge of contact made from the front office to a candidate is to none other than Sanders, who played for the Cowboys from 1995 to 1999 and won a Super Bowl in his first season with the team.

The conversations remain preliminary, according to someone with knowledge of what the Cowboys are thinking, and no interview has been discussed. The two sides are expected to remain in contact in the coming weeks.

Sanders is heading into his sixth season as a college coach, with the last two having been spent at Colorado coaching his sons, quarterback Shedeur and safety Shilo, who are both entering the 2025 NFL Draft. He also coached the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, two-way star Travis Hunter, for the last three seasons.

He has a career record of 40-18, including a 9-4 record at Colorado this past season. While he has not publicly sought out any NFL jobs, he was linked to having interest in the Raiders opening this past week. Now, the Cowboys are linked to him.

The widespread belief around NCAA and NFL circles is that Sanders is comfortable in Boulder, even if his sons are moving on, according to multiple sources. He has widely expressed his comfort in coaching at the college level and developing players and men out of high school. Despite the desire to stick around, Sanders’ respect for Jones remains high enough to keep tabs on the interest between both parties. According to FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt, Sanders has been offered a “very good” extension offer at Colorado that has not been signed.

Sanders shouldn’t be considered a top candidate at this juncture, but his name being the first linked to the opening in Dallas is certainly notable. For a list of potential candidates, click here.
