Chicago Bears request interview of Mike McCarthy; decision in hands of Jerry Jones, Cowboys
One day after the conclusion of the NFL regular season, the attention has turned to the coaching carousel and what the Dallas Cowboys will do with head coach Mike McCarthy in the coming days.
Now, a development has come from outside of Dallas.
On Monday afternoon, the Chicago Bears, who moved on from head coach Matt Eberflus during the season, put in a request to interview McCarthy for their head coach opening, a Cowboys team source says.
The Cowboys can choose to decline the request, but McCarthy will be free to interview with any team when Dallas’ exclusive negotiating rights expire on Jan. 14.
McCarthy said on Sunday after the season-ending loss to the Commanders that he hoped to “have direction in the near future” while Jerry Jones said he planned on following a similar timeline as he did in the past. He took over a week to decide Jason Garrett’s fate in 2020.
The Bears have familiarity with McCarthy after the Super Bowl-winning head coach coached in the NFC North for the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons. He is 19-7 all-time against the Bears.
Chicago has also put in requests to interview Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. General manager Ryan Poles also confirmed Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown will get a formal interview after winning the team’s season finale on Sunday.
