Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones explains why he won’t relinquish GM title

Following Dallas’ 23-19 Sunday loss to the Washington Commanders, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was unequivocal when asked if he would ever relinquish the general manager role he’s held since buying the team in 1989.

“No, no. I bought the team. I think the first thing that came out of my mouth... [at] that press conference, okay, somebody asked, ‘Did you buy this for your kids?,’ and I said, ‘Hell no I bought it for me,’ and I didn’t buy an investment. I bought an occupation,” said Jones.

Jones said since he ultimately has the final say as team owner there’s no purpose in someone else holding the general manager title.

“I was 46, I bought something I was gonna do for the rest of my life, and that’s what I’m doing. And so no, the facts are that, since I have to decide where the money is spent, then you might as well cut all the [expletive] out [I’m] making the call anyway,” said Jones.

Jones was asked how he would respond to critics who say his reign as GM has hampered the Cowboys and the Super Bowl champion responded by saying few teams have won more than the Cowboys over the past fifteen years.

The Cowboys have the ninth most wins in the entire NFL over the past 15 seasons, though only Dallas and the Buffalo Bills rank among the top ten teams in wins without making a Super Bowl appearance.
