Jerry Jones says he is ‘not under any unusual timeframe’ to make decision on future of coaching staff

In his final Tuesday morning radio availability of the NFL season, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was peppered with multiple questions about the future of head coach Mike McCarthy and the entirety of his coaching staff heading into the final week of the season.

Jones remained uncharacteristically hush about the topic, declining right off the bat on discussing those matters at this time. But it’s no secret that his front office constituents will have to help him come to a decision in the coming weeks with his entire staff having their contracts end after Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

“I don’t have any comment this morning,” Jones said when asked about if he has made a decision yet regarding McCarthy. “What I’m not going to do this morning is give any indication one way or the other that I’m not interested in having Mike back. I don’t want that to be the case at all and we’ve got this game ahead of us, but I’ll assure you that I have been, for weeks, thinking about how we go forward after this season.”

While Jones did mention that he has “liked the job [McCarthy] has done” when pressed more on the topic, he doesn’t foresee a specific timeline that he has to hit in order to make a decision on the future of his fifth-year head coach and his group of coordinators and assistants.

“I’m not under any unusual timeframe at all,” he said.

The lengthiest answer Jones gave in his radio availability had to do with the idea of him bringing McCarthy back in 2025 and how he would be able to sell it to a fanbase that wants some sort of change in the offseason.

He pointed to more experience on both sides of the ball and the return of quarterback Dak Prescott as reasons to buy in, regardless of who is head coach.

“I think that we’re going to have a more seasoned and talented [team],” Jones said. “I think we ought to all focus on having Dak back in terms of being back with his health and being able to execute…I look at where we are at our talent level, I feel real good that we’ve got the nucleus of a team that can compete and so that’s a lot to look at.”
