Trevon Diggs among two Dallas Cowboys cornerbacks out for the season
Week after week, the Dallas Cowboys have continued to lose key contributors for the season on both sides of the ball. Heading into their week 15 matchup in Charlotte against the Carolina Panthers, it’s no different.
Cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Caelen Carson are done for the season as each have a season-ending surgery at the end of their 2024 campaign, a team source confirmed.
Diggs, who has battled a knee injury since the bye week, made the decision late this week to not travel to Carolina and instead have the surgery to get a head start on preparing for 2025. He missed two games and was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game until the decision came on Saturday.
Carson had season-ending shoulder surgery prior to the team’s week 14 loss against the Cincinnati Bengals after suffering the injury in week three, missing four games and attempting to finish the season out before landing on the injured reserve in week 13.
Despite having season-ending ACL surgery early in the 2023 season, Diggs’ current knee issue is unrelated to his recovery from a year ago, a team source said. The surgery is instead related to a chondral injury, which is damage to the cartilage at the end of his bones in his joint. His recovery from the surgery is expected to last eight months. In 11 games this season, Diggs accounted for 42 total tackles and two interceptions.
After being drafted in the fifth round out of Wake Forest in April, Carson accounted for 27 tackles and four pass deflections in six games. He started in five games in his rookie year in place of DaRon Bland.
The Cowboys now have six season-ending injuries on defense as Diggs and Carson join linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (knee), defensive end Sam Williams (knee), cornerback Josh Butler (knee) and safety Markquese Bell (shoulder).
The remaining healthy cornerbacks include DaRon Bland, Jourdan Lewis, Amani Oruwariye, Israel Mukuamu and Kemon Hall. On the practice squad, the Cowboys also have Andrew Booth Jr., Troy Pride and Dee Delaney. Oruwariye is expected to start in place of Diggs in Sunday’s game against the Panthers.
