Why did Shannon Sharpe say Mike McCarthy was a figurehead head coach?
Following the Dallas Cowboys 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe was on ESPN’s ‘First Take’ on Tuesday and called Mike McCarthy a figurehead coach.
What was Sharpe’s reasoning?
“I don’t get what this infatuation with Mike McCarthy is. The mistakes that [the Cowboys] continuously make, I don’t think the roster is very well constructed I don’t think Mike McCarthy has a whole lot of say in the final 53 [man roster], free agency, the draft so basically he’s a figurehead, he has the title of head coach but it’s just a figurehead position,” said Sharpe.
Sharpe argued this would cause Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to be reluctant to make a change at the head coach position.
“The reason Jerry doesn’t wanna make a change is cause most guys are gonna want some say,’ said Sharpe, “ Just don’t give me the title and then don’t give me any ability to do anything with said title.”
Sharpe said this would make Bill Belichick a bad fit for the Cowboys because he would want control over football operations and finished his point by saying he doesn’t understand Jones and thinks the more he talks the worse he comes across.
McCarthy’s contract is up at the end of the season and many have speculated that the former New England Patriots head coach could end up in Dallas if they were to move on from McCarthy prior to Belichick reportedly agreeing to take a head coaching position at UNC upon approval by the AD, chancellor and trustees.
