Defensive tackle Linval Joseph explains why he joined the Dallas Cowboys
Linval Joseph was one of the later additions to the Dallas Cowboys roster, joining the team on Aug. 21, but the former Pro Bowl defensive tackle could play an important role in the middle.
Joseph explained how his time in Dallas has been after ‘Cowboys Night,’ a two-day event that celebrates the start of the NFL season, where fans can watch the team practice at the Star in Frisco after enjoying festivities at the Tostitos Championship Plaza.
“So far, so good, beautiful facility, great teammates, great coaches. I’m glad to get out there,” said Joseph.
Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer coached Joseph for six years (2014-19) while Zimmer was head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Joseph made back-to-back Pro Bowls with the Vikings beginning in 2016 and said his relationship with his former head coach played a role in his coming to Dallas.
“Plays a big role, I know Zimmer, I know this defense, I’m glad to be a part of this defense again. Cause I played six years there in his defense, and it really helped my game,” said Joseph, “ Never knew what was gonna happen, so when I did get the call it was like OK, well this kinda do make sense.”
The 35-year-old Joseph, who stands 6 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 329 pounds, is still figuring out his role with the Cowboys but is ready to do whatever the team asks.
“I’m new, we’re still trying to figure everything out. I know they want me to be a leader, help the young guys and just be great. Do what I know how to do best,” said Joseph, “Just want to come and play my best ball here.”
He also spoke about the importance of mentoring young players on the team.
“I love it. I embrace it. You know, it’s not going to last forever. One, but two, young guys look up to me, and I just want to make sure I put my best foot forward and just guide them, help them any way I can,” Joseph said.
Joseph could be an important mentor for Mazi Smith, last year’s first-round draft pick, who had a disappointing rookie season and is looking to establish himself in the league.
The Cowboys set their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday. Joseph and Smith will be joined by Micah Parsons, Demarcus Lawrence, Marshawn Kneeland, Tyrus Wheat, Osa Odighizuwa, Jordan Phillips and Chauncey Golston on the defensive line.
Joseph and the Cowboys will begin their season at 3:25 p.m. on Sept. 8 against the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
