Lawyers for Comstock Resources, a company that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is the majority shareholder of, are asking a court to bar any use of his name during the upcoming trial in a lawsuit.
The lawsuit is brought by Mississippi residents Deidra and Marlan Baucum, who allege Jones’ company has caused them medical issues including from toxins that seeped into their property.
The Baucums filed the lawsuit in 2014, alleging contamination in the soil, groundwater and air from a well site, and also believe the contamination caused Deidra to develop esophageal cancer.
The Baucums are asking for more than $27 million in the lawsuit as well as current and future medical costs for Deidra, WDAM-TV reported.
Comstock Resources is an independent natural gas producer that is focused on development mainly in East Texas and North Louisiana.
Jones was given $620 million worth of stock in Comstock in 2018 in exchange for oil fields in North Dakota and invested $475 million into the company in the following year, according to Forbes.
The Comstock Resources lawyer asked for the name of Jones, who owns 70% of the company, to be stricken to avoid influencing jurors who might not be fans of the Dallas Cowboys, the team which Jones has owned for the past 35 years, Forbes reported.
