Why was Johnny Manziel happy the Dallas Cowboys didn’t draft him?
Johnny Manziel took the football world by storm in 2012 when he burst onto the scene and became the first freshman to win a Heisman.
On Feb. 22., Manziel sat down with Shannon Sharpe for his “Club Shay Shay,” podcast and recounted his NFL career explaining he was happy he never got drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cleveland Browns drafted Manziel with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft but admitted on Sharpe’s podcast he wished Dallas had drafted him.
“I loved Jerry [Jones], I loved getting the chance to go to sporting events at [AT&T Stadium] and getting the chance to cross circles with him,” said Manziel, “ 16th pick of that draft was Dallas. I remember the anticipation of that draft in Radio City when that pick was coming up, and I had my fingers crossed underneath that table the entire time.”
“Looking back now thank god that didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be sitting here today,” said Manziel.
Manziel how numerous run-ins with the laws from his time at Texas A&M and in the NFL including an indictment by a Dallas grand jury in 2016 for a charge of assault causing bodily injury.
Manziel has struggled with substance abuse and run-ins with the law after being drafted in 2014 and said if he had played so close to home his worst characteristic would’ve been amplified in Dallas.
“It wouldn’t have been suicide that would have been the issue it would have been drinking and driving. It would’ve been taken a bag from someone you shouldn’t take it form,” said Manziel, “I think I know myself well enough to be able to say it would’ve been bad in its own right and luckily thankfully it didn’t happen even though at the time it’s what I wanted.
