Dallas Cowboys add to defensive staff with focus on suspect improving run game, line

New Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has moved quickly to fill holes on his defensive staff with a focus on the defensive line and improving the run defense.

Former Cincinnati Bengals and Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther has been added as the defensive run game coordinator.

Guenther worked with Zimmer in Cincinnati and the Minnesota Vikings. He will be charged with improving a run defense that proved to be the unit’s biggest liability last season.

Former Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina is coming aboard in the same capacity. He replaces Aden Durde, who became the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator.

Zgonina spent the last two seasons with Commanders where tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne were the best parts of the defense.

And former Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis, who was famously taken over Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft, has been hired as the assistant defensive line coach.

Ellis played for the Cowboys for 11 years, the first nine with Zimmer on the staff.

His coaching experience includes two head coaching stops at Texas College and Southwest Assemblies of God University (SAGU).
