What NFL record did Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey set against Eagles on Sunday?
Brandon Aubrey set a NFL record in the Cowboys’ 33-13 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium when he became the first kicker in league history to make two kicks from at least 59 yards in the same game.
“I’m just trying to go out there and do my job,” said Aubrey, “I’m sure not a lot of guys get coaches that are willing to give them those opportunities, so, just being able to convert those opportunities and keep them coming feels good.”
Aubrey made four field goals in the game along with three PATs and single-handedly outscored the Philadelphia Eagles 15-13.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke about what Aubrey has brought to the team.
“I have to pinch myself,” said Jones, “ I’m proud for him, I’m proud for us. I don’t know that I’ve witnessed any more impressive kicking exhibition than what we had out there tonight.”
Aubrey joined the Cowboys in the offseason to replace former kicker Brett Maher whose struggles in last season’s playoffs became infamous.
Aubrey’s record-setting kicks came on a 60-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 59-yard field goal in the third quarter in the NFC East matchup at AT&T Stadium.
Aubrey talked about how it felt to have Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy continually call his number on long-range field goals.
“ [McCarthy] having the confidence and faith in me to send me out there in the first quarter, [third] quarter, it gives confidence to me,” said Aubrey.
Cowboys offensive lineman Tyler Smith spoke about the confidence the team had in Aubrey.
“He’s huge for us, Brandon’s a sniper. We take a lot of pride in just doing our job on field goal, just knowing that as long as we hold up for him he’ll hold up for us” said Smith, “Invaluable to the squad, you know come in making a big impact in his first season. I mean that’s just him, that’s who he is.”
He added field goals from 45 and 50 yards in the fourth quarter. Aubrey has the second most (7) made 50-yard-plus field goals in the NFL with only Cleveland Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins having more.
Aubrey battled with Tristan Vizcaino during training camp with both players struggling in training camp with some at the time suggesting the Cowboys should sign a veteran kicker. Aubrey won the job and hasn’t looked back since.
Aubrey started his career with a miss on his first kick — an extra point — and then proceeded to set an NFL record for the most consecutive field goal makes to start a career, a streak that is still ongoing. He’s made 30 straight field goals this season.
Aubrey is a Plano native who attended Plano Senior and went to Notre Dame to play soccer collegiality before being drafted in the first round of the MLS Draft. Aubrey started his kicking career with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.
He hasn’t been a perfect kicker, though. He has missed three of 39 extra points this season.
Despite, Aubrey’s historic start to his NFL career he hasn’t been surprised by what he’s been able to accomplish.
“You take it one kick at a time,” says Aubrey, “I know I can make any of the kicks they’ve asked me to do, so go out there and make it, is something I expect myself to do at this point.”
