Why fans are miffed at Jerry Jones’ comments on trade deadline, Dallas Cowboys roster
A day after the Texas Rangers qualified for the World Series for the third time since the Dallas Cowboys last reached the Super Bowl in 1995, owner Jerry Jones provided a buzz kill to his fan base on his radio show on 105.3 The Fan with confusing comments on his team’s roster, trade deadline attitude and not being on the same level of the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles.
Jones said he likes where the Cowboys are at 4-2 after the bye and he believes they have room to improve.
But the Cowboys owner remains irked by the 42-10 loss to the 49ers two weeks ago, especially considering that San Francisco has lost two games since, including a 22-17 setback to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.
Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 35 of 45 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was completely flummoxed by the 49ers defense two weeks earlier, completing 14 of 24 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in the humbling loss.
“I would’ve liked to have played better against the 49ers,” Jones said. “You see a team step up and play like Minnesota did and their quarterback did, they can be had, the 49ers. “Four and two, I will take it, for sure. But we have better football ahead of us.”
But as much Jones says the Cowboys have better football ahead, he also refused to put his team on the same level as the 49ers (5-2) and the Eagles (6-1).
The Cowboys play the NFC East-leading Eagles for the first time on Nov. 5.
“We belong in the upper echelons [of teams in the NFC],” Jones said. “I’m not going to say we belong on the field with San Fran, and we haven’t played Philly. So, I don’t want to go that far. But we’re in the upper echelon.”
Given that the Eagles have already made two trades to improve their roster and bolster their status as a Super Bowl contender, Jones was asked if the Cowboys were going to be aggressive heading into next week’s NFL trade deadline. He initially punted.
He said he likes the Cowboys roster and wouldn’t initiate any trade talks.
“It’ll have to come our way. I don’t want to preclude it in any way, but it always does,” Jones said. “You have a lot of machinations that you’re working with every day, I do, but the initiation of an opportunity to make a trade at this time that would help us, principally has to start on the other end. That’s not showing a lack of aggressiveness, it’s just that’s where it starts.
“I like where we are with our personnel today, so I’m not thinking in any way that we need to upgrade our roster.”
Jones didn’t completely close the door on making a move to help end what is now a 28-year gap since the Cowboys last Super Bowl title.
“I would really extend to improve our team right now, so that gives you an idea because I think we’ve got a team that is a contender,” Jones said. “So I would do it right now — would I do something that would take away from this team so that it can help us in the future? Probably not.”
Got it?
