Dallas Cowboys dealt major setback, lose Pro Bowl CB Trevon Diggs for season with torn ACL

The Dallas Cowboys worst fears were realized when a MRI confirmed that Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs is out of the season after suffering a torn ACL.

Diggs suffered a left knee injury in practice Thursday.

He hobbled off the field and was seen walking past the Cowboys locker room on crutches.

“I’m not gonna speak on anything, way too early,” quarterback Dak Prescott said during his press conference. “Hoping for the best, simple as that.”

The Cowboys weren’t confident on getting good news about Diggs and the MRI results confirmed their worst fears.

Diggs posted a thank you to Cowboys fans for their support on his X account.

“Thank you for all the prayers and I appreciate everyone for checking on me! This is just God’s Plan. I will be back and better!,” he said.

The team released an official statement: “Cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered a left knee injury during today’s practice. A subsequent MRI was performed that confirmed a torn ACL. A timetable for Diggs’ return to play has not been established, but he is currently projected to miss the remainder of the current season.”

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones talked about the Diggs injury on an radio appearance on SA SportsStar in San Antonio.

“It’s unfortunately how these things can happen,” Jones said. “He just took an awkward step trying to make a play on a ball. It torqued the wrong way and got his knee. It didn’t look like much but when those steps get awkward unfortunately, sometimes the ligaments don’t hold up.”

It ends what was a fantastic start to the season Diggs, who allowed a quarterback passer rating of 1.0 when thrown at through the first two games, the lowest rating allowed in the NFL in 2023.

Diggs, who has a pass interception and a forced fumble so far, has 18 career interceptions, tied for the most since he was drafted in 2020.

The Cowboys would likely start DeRon Bland at cornerback opposite Stephon Gilmore with Jourdan Lewis playing slot against the Cardinals on Sunday.

“I do think we’ve got good men on this roster who can step up and play,” Jones said. “Jourdan Lewis is a good nickel corner. We will kick DeRon Bland outside like we did last year. I think Bland ended up with five or six interceptions last year. So I think we’re in a good spot.”

Dallas plays at Arizona on Sunday at 3:25 p.m. start CT.
