Dallas Cowboys would like deals for Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs before camp
The Dallas Cowboys will conclude minicamp on Thursday and take a month off before training camp in late July when preparation for the 2023 season begins in earnest.
The accomplished almost all their goals as far as improving the team from 2022 with their most aggressive offseason in years, including the the acquisition of two starters in cornerback Stephen Gilmore and receiver Stephen Gilmore via trades with the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans.
But the Cowboys will head into the break with some unfinished business.
The Cowboys entered the offseason looking to sign quarterback Dak Prescott, receiver CeeDee Lamb, cornerback Trevon Diggs to contract extensions.
Stephen Jones said the Cowboys have touched base with the representatives of all the players, thus tacitly opening negotiations.
But nothing is imminent.
Jones said the Cowboys would like to get one or two done before training camp.
And even though Diggs is up at the end of the season, while Prescott and Lamb are under contract through 2024, Jones said there is no certain hierarchy to address them.
Jones said right tackle Terence Steele, who is playing under the restricted free agent tender in 2023, is also on the radar for an extension.
“We’ve got more than just Diggs,” Jones said. “Timing has got to be right for those guys and it’s gotta be right for us. Our goal would be to hopefully start to chip away at this, because we do have guys up, whether it’s a (Terence) Steele, whether it’s a Diggs, whether it’s CeeDee, right on down the line, we’ve got guys that are going to need to be addressed as we move forward. But our focus is also on winning in 2023.
“No specific order. It’s just kind of when opportunity arises. They gotta be motivated to want to do it. It seems like more and more guys want to wait because usually the price goes up from one year to the next. But if the opportunity is there, we sure would like to get 1-2-3 of these guys signed. We’d love to do more than one, if we could (before training camp). Just because you want to doesn’t mean, it takes two to tango.”
The Cowboys would like to get something done as soon as possible. But there are not facing a deadline. They would be just as comfortable going through the 2023 season as is, per owner Jerry Jones.
“It is not imperative for me to wrap anything up at any particular period of time,’’ Jerry Jones said. “We’ve got it right now where we can go to camp and have our year based on where we are contractually.’’
