Stephon Gilmore says it’s a “blessing” to join the Dallas Cowboys
Stephon Gilmore was raised in a family of Dallas Cowboys fans.
Now the newest Cowboy will wear the blue and silver on Sundays.
“I was very excited, you know I’ve been a Dallas fan my whole life,” Gilmore said on Thursday during a teleconfernce with the Cowboys media. “My uncle, my dad, they grew up Dallas fans.”
The Cowboys traded a 2023 fifth-round draft pick to the Indianapolis Colts this week for the cornerback.
Gilmore has been a standout player in the NFL for more than a decade, racking up five Pro Bowl selections, two NFL All-Pro first-team selections and a defensive player of the year award.
Gilmore is a pivotal addition to an already talented secondary that boasts All-Pro Trevon Diggs, Daron Bland and the newly resigned Donovan Wilson.
Gilmore knows how talented this unit could be but also knows words are wind.
“I think we can be good as we wanna be,” he said. “You can’t really talk about it, you gotta go out and do it. I’m looking forward to putting the work in with these guys, getting to know ‘em and us helping each other out to be the best secondary we can be.”
The Cowboys have led the NFL in takeaways for the last two seasons and adding Gilmore should make their defense that much more formidable with another lockdown corner they can rely on.
“They gotta throw it so one of us will be making plays,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to knowing the ball coming to someone.“
Gilmore’s championship experience could be critical for a Cowboys team looking to advance beyond the divisional round for the first time in almost 30 years.
“I just think come in and be myself. Obviously, you know I’ve been to the big dance before, but I just think at the end of the day it takes a team coming together all playing as one,” said Gilmore.
Gilmore is on his third team in the last three seasons, but his play hasn’t slowed down yet and he’s excited to play for the Cowboys.
“I’m just looking forward to coming to an organization like this. It’s a blessing,” he said.
