The Dallas Cowboys had the eighth most rushing yards in the NFL in the 2022 season.

This was due in large part to Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard who rushed for a combined 1,883 yards on 242 carries with 21 touchdowns. Pollard and Elliott account for 82% of the Cowboys rushing yards during the regular season.

Pollard is a free agent this offseason and Elliot is thought to have taken his last snap as a Cowboy.

Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith speaking with ProFootballTalk made the case to bring both players back.

“I’m keeping both,” Smith told PFT, “I may franchise tag Pollard and I may go for a contract restructure with Zeke. But I’m keeping both, and the reason why is because we’ve got to get Pollard back healthy, and we need Zeke, and we need Malik as well. We need that three-headed monster right now to rotate. Malik gives us a chance to get Pollard time to get back healthy again.”

The Cowboys season ended with a tough loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the playoffs and they have parted with former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

How the Cowboys decide to proceed with Elliott and Pollard will greatly impact how Mike McCarthy structures his new offense.
