The Dallas Cowboys have still not officially ruled out running back Ezekiel Elliott for Sunday’s game against the Bears.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Elliott has made some progress with his sprained knee and the only chance he would to play would be if he participated in practice on Saturday.

But that too is a long shot.

As first reported by the Star-Telegram on Wednesday, multiple sources continue to contend Elliott is not expected to play vs. the Bears so he can take advantage of next’s bye and have a couple of weeks to rest the knee before the Cowboys resume play at the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 13.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t officially rule out Elliott either but confirmed the plan to take advantage of the bye so Elliott could potentially be his best for the bulk of the season.

“It had everything to do with how we’re doing this this weekend with this bye coming up,” Jones said. “I’m not so sure we would’ve done it this way had we not had the bye.”

“This just gives too good of an opportunity if we don’t use Zeke, and we’ll see how he is responding as the week goes along, but if we don’t use him, it’s just too great of a time to get him in top shape.”

Elliott has missed just one game in his career due to an injury and that came back in 2020.

Elliott played in all 18 games last season, including playoffs, despite suffering a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Week 4.
