Dallas Cowboys still looking to replace Amari Cooper, talked trade for DeVante Parker
The Dallas Cowboys are continuing to show their hand when it comes to their desire to fill the need at receiver following the trade of Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns and the loss of Cedrick Wilson to the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
A source confirmed an ESPN report on Monday that the Cowboys had expressed interest in acquiring former Miami Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker before he was traded to the New England Patriots last weekend.
The source acknowledged that the team had discussed trading for Parker.
While it’s further evidence that the Cowboys are still looking to add a veteran receiver to the roster, the team is confident that 2020 first-round pick CeeDee Lamb will replace Cooper as the team’s No. 1 receiver.
But there are reasons for concerns about the rest of the group. Michael Gallup, the projected No. 2 on the depth chart, could miss the first two or three games before he’s able to return from a torn ACL.
The team signed former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver James Washington in free agency to a one-year, prove-it deal.
But he isn’t enough to replace the production from Cooper and Wilson during Gallup’s absence. Cooper led the Cowboys with eight touchdown receptions last season, and Wilson added another six.
The Cowboys are seriously considering taking a receiver with their first pick (and 24th overall) in the NFL Draft, which starts three weeks from Thursday. Three first-round prospects are slated to visit the team’s headquarters this week, led by Traylon Burks of Arkansas who was in on Monday. The other two are Chris Olave of Ohio State and Drake London of Southern California.
