Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones mourns for best friend, long-time assistant Marylyn Love
Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys organization suffered a devastating loss on Thursday with the passing of longtime executive assistant Marylyn Love.
Love worked for Jones for more than 40 years and she came with him to Dallas when he bought the Cowboys in 1989.
He called her his best friend in a statement released by the team.
“The entire Dallas Cowboys organization is devastated by the news of Marylyn’s passing,” Jones said. “Marylyn has been by my side, she has been my rock, my voice, my calm in the storm for more than 40 years. This is a loss that everyone in my family, everyone in the Dallas Cowboys family, feels. Marylyn was not only my executive assistant, but she was my advisor, my confidant, my best friend and a cherished member of our family. We all mourn together with her family; a family we all hold very close to our hearts.”
Former Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders paid tribute to Love in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, “Marylyn covering for Jerry was the greatest cover corner in the NFL.”
Love was born in Oklahoma City and worked at a law office there when she was recruited by Jones to come work for him. She commuted from Oklahoma City to his Little Rock, Ark., office in the 1980s become joining him in Dallas with the Cowboys.
“I will never forget the day she left that law firm in Oklahoma to join me. That day changed my life. That day changed the life of many,” Jones said. “Marylyn was respected and loved by everyone who passed by her desk or spoke with her on the phone. She was our foundation. Marylyn helped shape this franchise as one of very few people who have been with me and my family since Day 1.”
No information was given on services for Love.
But it was the continuation of a devastating week for Jones that began with him being the subject of a paternity suit, claiming he fathered a child out of wedlock back in 1996.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Alexandra Davis, a 25-year-old congressional aide who grew up in Dallas and claims that her mother and Jones had a relationship in the 1990s, the Dallas Morning News reported.
According to court documents, Jones and the woman’s mother had an agreement for financial support, as long as the Cowboys owner wasn’t revealed as the father.
