Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott upbeat, driven and throwing it well, per Mike McCarthy
It took roughly 209 days before Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was able to spend quality time with quarterback Dak Prescott.
Blame Prescott’s boycott of the team’s off season program in a contract dispute before signing his franchise tag in June and the COVID-19 shutdown of the NFL facilities.
But that all changed Sunday when McCarthy addressed Prescott and the veterans for the first time and they began the first phase of training camp with strength and conditioning and meetings.
Although Prescott is a little behind in adjusting to the language of the new offense, McCarthy is impressed with his quarterback’s arm, attitude and demeanor.
“I think Dak has done a great job with the time away,” McCarthy said. “The biggest adjustment for Dak is the language — which has been an adjustment for all of us but he’s looked very good in the throwing segments of the strength and conditioning phase we’re in right now. And I’m very pleased where he is and very impressed.”
Most important, McCarthy said Prescott does not look or act like a player who is bitter about his contract situation. He has been prepared, detailed and fun to be around — no different than he has been his entire career.
Because the Cowboys and Prescott were unable to come to terms on a contract extension, he will play the 2020 season on the franchise tag of $31.4 million. The two sides can’t negotiate again until after the season.
“With us being around each other for the first time, I’ve really enjoyed his personality,” McCarthy said. “He’s very upbeat, very driven. so I’d say he’s kind of picked up where he left off based on what I’ve been told about him as far as he operates. Very detailed in his preparation. He’s a lot of fun to be around.”
