Injury thwarts ex-Cowboy Tony Romo’s bid to 3-peat at American Century Championship

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s bid for a three-peat in the American Century Championship golf tournament was ruined when he was forced to withdraw on the final day due to injury.

Romo, who won the title in 2018 and 2019, stood tied for fourth after the first two rounds at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada.

But a wrist injury suffered late in the second round on Saturday made him iffy for the final round.

Romo, now an NFL analyst for CBS, sought medical attention after a shot on the 16th hole. He had his wrist taped, but finished the round using an unorthodox swing.

Romo decided not to chance it on Sunday, withdrawing before the final round.

Tennis player Mardy Fish won the event, holding off former Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who played in the tournament fresh off signing 10-year, $450 million contract extension, finished tied for 38th.

Former Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware finished 68th, just ahead of NBA legend Charles Barkley, former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George and Romo.
