Dallas Cowboys

If Dak Prescott is the Dallas Cowboys’ future, why so much interest in Jalen Hurts?

When the Dallas Cowboys released their first video of a virtual meeting with a draft prospect on social media it raised lots of eyebrows.

And not just because they voluntarily gave a glimpse of who they were considering in Thursday’s draft but also because of who the first released interview was with: Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Given the current impasse in contract negotiations between the Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott, it certainly made one wonder.

Prescott has yet to sign the exclusive franchise tag and plans to boycott the team’s virtual offseason program that begins Monday.

Are the Cowboys trying to send Prescott a message? Could they be interested in Hurts as a potential replacement?

What are they thinking with Hurts, who has drawn interest from a number of teams?

Vice president Stephen Jones addressed the Hurts interview on his radio show on 105.3 FM the Fan on Friday.

“I don’t think it has anything to do with Dak’s contract when you talk about our interest in a quarterback,” Jones said. “You are going down the wrong path when you equate it to the Dak situation, his contract situation. I don’t think it equates to what we are looking at there.”

Jones said that the interest in Hurts, who is projected to be drafted between the second and fourth rounds, is as a backup quarterback, and possibly a longer term development project.

He pointed out that current backup Cooper Rush is in the final year of his deal. And head coach Mike McCarthy had a history of drafting and developing young quarterbacks as possible future trade options, a practice that dates back to McCarthy’s days with the Green Bay Packers.
