Kansas City Chiefs complete comeback to win first Super Bowl title in 50 years
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, in Super Bowl LIV Sunday night. It was the franchise’s first championship in 50 years.
In what was billed as a classic contrast in styles and philosophies, stumping oddsmakers who had the game as a virtual toss-up before kickoff, Super Bowl LIV didn’t disappoint.
For the third time in these playoffs, the Chiefs came back from a 10-point deficit to win the game. Entering the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were down 20-10, and got two touchdowns in less than four minutes to go on top 24-20. Running back Damien Williams iced the scoring with a 38-yard run with 1:12 remaining.
It was pure theater with Chiefs quarterback and Texan Patrick Mahomes, the would-be king of the NFL, who was looking to supplant Tom Brady as the face of the league with his first Super Bowl title one year after winning the league MVP award, starring as the leading man.
“We never lost faith. I think that’s the biggest thing,” said Mahomes, the former Texas Tech star and native of Whitehouse near Tyler. “Nobody had their head down. And we believed in each other, and that’s what we preached all year long.”
Kansas City coach Andy Reid, who had 207 regular-season victories, won his first Super Bowl title. “That was great man,” he said after the game.
But the triumph hardly comes without tragedy.
The 49ers took a 20-10 lead in the third quarter when Mahomes seemingly blinked.
After recovering his own fumble on a strip sack by 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, Mahomes forced a pass to receiver Tyreek Hill into coverage on 3rd and 12. The ball went right into the hands of linebacker Fred Warner, giving the 49ers a first down at the 45.
This time he threw 38 yards to Sammy Watkins to power a 65-yard drive, ending with a 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Damien Williams and 24-20 lead.
